WebmasterWorld is experiencing the heaviest traffic in its history.
Well Brett, there have been a big change to webmasterworld over the last year, and personally I enjoy it less than I use to. There is too many posts that doesn't contribute in any way, and I am giving up on many large threads and probably loosing a lot of those valuable posts, hidden between all the "when will Google update", "my site went up", "mine too", "when will it happen" etc...etc... Sometimes it reminds me of "just another chat channel".
I am pretty sure you and your moderators could cut half of the posts away without anyone would miss a thing. Actually it would improve these forums.
Just my thoughts.
One thing that goes a long way to get the best out of the board:
use the board also by the forums list. Thjere are so many forums here, which hold fantastic posts on all kinds of topics. I honestly think many people don't see that because they are so glued to the active list and to Google.

If you know and would be so kind as to share, what are the
server specs of the box WebmasterWorld runs on? I'm wondering about stuff like the OS, CPU type and speed, amount of memory, type of hard drive(s), etc. Is WebmasterWorld on a dedicated box by itself or on a box with other domains?
I'm thinking knowing the kind of request per second and traffic WebmasterWorld's server can take (and it's specs) might be helpful for those deciding how beefy a server they need for their sites.
Plus, I'm a techie and wonder about such things. ;-)
Also, does anyone know what a webhost can do in the heat of the traffic surge to "rescue" a site like WebmasterWorld that gets a high load all at once?

Next step is a load share system that is about
finished on the software side, but has to have glue logic put in depending on the server setup.
Why have I been reluctant to empliment it? Because it means server management 24x7. That is a major time consideration and would mean a full time tech oriented ($60k+) employee.

Too many users with netscape and a surprising number of older users that use non-css ready browsers. CSS would cut 10-15% off the top end just because it's css. Regardless of what you've been told or believe, 10-15% of the world still doesn't like css and it doesn't work yet in this environment. It's close, but not there yet - too many usability issues. There's a crowd of people that don't appreciate the look of css - I'm one of them. (besides, it's not a bandwidth issue, it is a server load issue that external css would actualy make worse instead of better)

I've got most of the kinks worked out. The toughest part is dealing with the rogue bots. I've just about got all the major cable providers (havens for rogue bots) as required login now (sorry had to be done). I think the day is fast approaching when we will see all members as required login (not required subscription - just required login). That mandates a few smaller changes, but I just want everyone to be aware that it has been actively discussed with the high council for about a year. We are getting pretty close to that time.
WebmasterWorld is a thriving community and may not need search engine traffic to survive due to a loyal userbase. If BestBBS is rolled out to sites that need the pull from the search engines, will required login prevent a BestBBS user from generating SE traffic?
If a forum is smaller in size and/or just starting out, can the forum software afford to take the "hit" from the rogue spiders?
