This thread [
webmasterworld.com...] intrigued me enough to start this thread, which I hope will be fun for one and all.
Most computer sound systems are fairly straightforward. Two speakers, magnetically inert, hardwired together, usually marked "left" and "right", one with volume knob, and perhaps a "tone" knob, and a lead to plug into your sound output.
Simple.
In the same vein of simplicity, there are units that include a subwoofer, not hardwired, but cabled with the "stereo" pair, and which might have additional amplification and the input lead which connects to the computer audio (speaker) out.
That's a step up.
More serious setups follow from there, multi-imaging, quad, seven, etc. And power levels in output and distortion handling go up.
What do you use? Or do you avoid all sound by never setting up audio of any kind?
Me, I like noise. Started as a musician. Owned and operated recording studios through the 80s-90s, so my audio need is different from most. Computer allow me to keep that music going, multitrack, production, demo, and in that regard my "sound system" is a bit different.
The computer output drops into a pre-amp, from there to a 16 channel recording mixer (pro recording, not stage sound), and that out is returned to the computer. The outboard mixer sends a monitor out (stereo) to a 500wt bi-channel studio power amp which powers two studio monitors (three way 15" rated at 500wts each)
When the customer says "turn it up!" one's bowels might move. :)
All the above, of course, is a nightmare of cable, heat, physical size and (ahem) expense which also includes a secure space in which to house all the above and have room left over to do, well, work! I use this system to make money doing everything from demos to jingles/commercials to movie sound support.
But, and this where the fun does begin, most webmasters will never had need of anything like that described above, but what do you actually use?
The little boxen, the boxen and one? 4wts, 44wts? Cans? (headphones). Many sites do have audio... hopefully none of it AUTOPLAY!, so you must have some method of tracking/listening to what you have.
And there usually is a difference in audio systems as applied to desktops and laptops.
I'm just wondering what do YOU use? or What you might wish for?
