Some newly hired PhD (a woman with a degree in cognitive psychology of all things) approached me and asked, dumbfounded, "Doesn't it bother you to be the only female on your team?" I smiled and told her, "No, why ever would it? We're all geeks and programmers."
Why would a woman working with a group of men be bothered? I would have no problem whatsoever working with a complete crew of woman. I used to work packing cherries in high school. They stuck me on a packline that was all woman. Thirty to one ratio, never complained a bit :)
If personalities and work ethics mesh, in my experience, that counteracts any gender, racial, religious or other differences. If personalities clash or don't meld well, that's where tension and issues arise.
For example, I've worked on a team of primarily women and been driven crazy due to clashing personalities. I don't mesh well among too many "Office Gossips" or "Victims" or "Work Shirkers".

Yup. Been there done that one. I've always been better with men on a team, as long as they weren't into the "little woman should be happy at home instead of trying to do a man's job" or worse, the "what say we get together after work and hop into the sack" stuff....
['nother caveat: Considering that my work life began in 1970, I've maybe seen a lot more of the worst side of women-in-the-workplace stuff than some of you....]
So, it isn't no surprise at all to see women working in web development... Lots of portuguese web design companies have female web designers and they do have bigger success than other companies... It's a female sence...
That's why I always ask my girlfriend to see how my websites are, so I can have a opinion from someone with better taste and understanding in visuals than me.
I'm in no way defending women, i'm just trying to break this male vs female thing...
Since I figured out writing information type articles was a lot profitable for me than writing code (adsense + affiliate programs), I've switched to doing that predominantly. However, I do like the troubleshooting and problem solving involved with programming. My introduction to it was in Qmodem scripts back in the BBS days =)

Woman? What woman? It was a Ph.D.
<snicker snicker..it was a JOKE!>
So, of the women who've responded -- how many of you are the more tech savvy of your house?
I'm more of tech savvy than my partner currently, though he held a programming job way back even before my Commodore 64 days so it's not like he's a technophobe (Gee, I'm managing to date him even more than myself at the same time <g>). I've got to admit I'm not all that much of a techie compared to the friend (also female) who wrote my latest shopping cart with me - thereby starting me on a brand new programming kick by introducing me to the wonderful world of PHP and databases. Whether it's programming, web design or graphics, I think of playing with computers as just that. It's a great way for me to shift gears away from all the tasks involved with the running of, and production for, my business.
She calls herself a "webmistress" and uses this actually as her email address too.
I encouraged her to join WW and this thread. Hope everybody here can stand some rude language and Irokese haircuts - she's rather sticky to this stereotypic outfit and behaviour :-)

I was, until I got married. My hub is more tech savy, but that comes from constantly having to reformat his Windows run PCs or chasing viruses while I sit in the background plugging away with my Mac that never dies. Go! Mac

That would be me. My husband had never owned a computer before we lived together and he's somewhat suspicious of them. He's had a brief go at shopping online but watching him attempt to type and use the mouse is quite painful, bless 'im.
I am not tech savvy in the least! PHP, perl, cgi bins and CSS are as mysterious to me as radio waves and as elusive as the holy Grail. If I have to move my computer, I am thrilled if I hook it up correctly and the printer actually works!
I am a content webmaster who can write very basic html. That's it folks! Not a bad photographer either and I am learning to do some cool things with PhotoShop. :)
