Hello,

I have used one of the free submit services (dopnt konw which anymore), added myself to the open directory, and saw traffic grow steadily by about 50-60%.

I am listed in altavista, and google, regularly get hits (referreers) from inktomi, aol, and netscape, recently msn.

Still, I am well below 1k hits for pages a month (around 500-700 hits for pages).

I dont believe in banner ads, yet would like to promote my site further.

Ideas what I could do next? - How do I generate 'useful' traffic?

Make sure you are well listed with the directories. Are you listed with Yahoo, LookSmart, NBCi yet? ODP is great, generates traffic through the other sites using it. I would use manual submission for the major engines and directories. Is your site international?

Also look into paid for submissions, especially if you are selling a product. There is a "Pay Per Click Search Engines" forum, lots of good info on GoTo there. Inktomi is another paid for service, along with Yahoo and LookSmart. Check in the Inktomi and Directories forums. Work on establishing incoming links from specific topic-related sites and outgoing links to increase popularity. That's a start...

Yes, reciprocal link arrangements are more than worth the time you'll spend. Aggravating, frustrating, time-consuming -but now almost required in SEO.

Skirril: you didn't mention if you have done anything to optimize your pages in order to get good rankings for targeted keywords. Have you read these two classical discussions here at WebmasterWorld:
[webmasterworld.com...] and
[webmasterworld.com...]
Very useful knowledge in both.

I have done some optimisation on keywords, etc, though I believe, and I have seen with a competitor that e.g Keywords are taken less and less inotaccount. (the competitor had a keyword list well over 50 terms. I dont think they get that muich traffic. though)

Another interesting point I would like to ask about:

I know I need a linkback to the main site on every page (every page can be pointed at by a SE), but what about a listing of all other pages on every page? Right now I have a section 'other interesting pages' on every page except the main page.

Most of my pages are very low on bandwith usage, i only use tables, and very few images. Can robots cope with info in tables? (I dont nest tables)
What about links in tables?

1. Keywords will not do you much good anymore. Some though, in some engines.
2. Linking every page to every other is a good design practise (makes things easier for the user) But search engine spiders will find them, even if they are just linked from the top.
3. Text and links in tables is no problem for any SE.
