If I do a good job of submitting my websiste to the many search engines would you suggest that I still pay for key word searches via companies such as Go To.com?
I have another website that was registered with some of the search engines a couple of years ago. Would resubmitting this website be to my advantage?
Would appreciate any advice
It's good to ask for help before you jump in and you've come to the right place for that.
I always start with the directories. Those are basically a one-time submission. Get a good listing then in Yahoo, ODP and Looksmart. From there Google will pick the site up so you don’t need to submit there. I do pay for inclusion in Inktomi, which filters, into many of the back-ups for engines I don’t get a lot of traffic from. I submit to FAST and Alta Vista. There are a few alternative search engines and portals that you can submit to.
From there I look for vortal/portal/hubs that are within my themes. These are very good for posting your link pop and will sometimes bring traffic. Do a bit of looking around here because you’ll find a tremendous amount of specific and helpful tips for each engine and directory as well as ideas for boosting your sites link popularity.
I use a spreadsheet to keep record. On the top I put all the pertinent info I’ll need for submitting. This includes url, email, and then the title, description and often keywords as you get into some of the vortals. It helps to have your name, address, phone number and fax handy as well. Just makes the whole process easier.
Keep a good record of which page you submit to which search engine or directory and the date. Check back often to see when you are listed and note that date as well. This really helps me to know where I’ve been and what I’m doing.
For search engines that take them I submit five pages a day. Alta Vista works on that pattern so I follow suit. Directories only want your main page and it’s a one-time thing, usually. There are always exceptions so that’s where digging around in here will help.
At the top of the page here you’ll see sticky mail. I’m going to send something additionally through that so when you see the number pop up click there.
I have read that some of the search engines give you a higher ranking if they find you rather than if you submit to them.
Anybody had first-hand experience that this may be so ??
If this is so .. which of the bigger engines should I be submitting to, and which should I be waiting for to come around and find me ?
