We all know that this is not the kind of thing that modern SEO professionals do (unless it works in terms of ROI ;) ) and that for a while, search engines (AV, Ink, Google) have taken various stands against it.

What about the search engine optimization community? I'm convinced that it is the job of the search engine to police it's own database...but what about the reprecussions to the SEO? Should the engine ban them? I think that's a little out of proportion...after all, it was a hole in the algo, so to speak, that let the SEO through the door.

I recall some of the stuff that had google going a long while back...it was very, very easy to crack and race to the top. Now, more and more people are convinced only "quality promotion" gets you there (to the top, that is.) And for the most part, this is now reflected in the serps on a daily basis.

The road to a perfect algo...what research would you employ? Kleinberg/Hilltop? A little bit of Sergey/Page? Or would it be something far, far more sinister....
