I just noticed numerous hits yesterday with this UA. There's many different numbers in place of * (e.g. user45.ip3000.com).

Interesting. Check this [ip3000.com] out. Seems they analyze images, photographs, mp3s and collect data from them to classify your site.
Anyone know if this technology is being used in SE's?

Indeed they have been spidering for a while. I was in contact with them coming up to a year ago now. They told me they would be up and running in about 12-weeks. 12-weeks later (last year). Still nothing. Not quite sure where this is going.
