I only ocassionaly visit spamhaus nowadays but I found the following there yesterday, which I thought may be of interest re: where bots and their masters come from...

[spamhaus.org...]

and a rather older one for hostmasters on avoiding fraudulent signups - pity not all hostmasters know about this...

Spamhaus deals *mostly* with forum spammers, While I consider it a valuable resource for webmasters who host forums & other CMS that support member sign-ups, I don't so I rarely use their info.

RE: botnets, I'm more concerned with those who are false-clicking my advertisers (hosted, 3rd party & Adsense.) However I'm sure there is a significant crossover to both categories, so those linked Spamhaus articles are a good read, thanks. Small surprise that OVH leads the pack!

Thanks for the link to the botnet article. I noticed that the operators of botnets tend to avoid using Godaddy as their domain registrar.

Actually I avoid Godaddy too, but probably for different reasons.

To be more precise, originally with email spammers but they have expanded their services and now provide a few web-orientated services. I used to use them a lot to check mail spammer IPs but since migrating my mail servers to postfix this is seldom necessary now as it's far more automated.

Botnets, however, cross boundaries and any given set of compromised computers could be used for spamming on one day and web site hacking another.

Nice to see another botnet taken down last week and its crew arrested!
