Four hours ago on an ad-free site hitting from:

msnbot-157-56-1-18.search.msn.com
(a.k.a. 157.56.1.18)

robots.txt? Yes BUT with NO UA (so no-go):

"GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1" 403 "-" "-"

The UA appeared when it went for root in the same second:

"GET / HTTP/1.1" 302 "-" "BingAdsAdInsightBot"

FWIW:

Google sez: "Your search - BingAdsAdInsightBot - did not match any documents." Hmm.

And nada re Bing, ditto Bing Webmaster Tools: [bing.com...]

Momentary test, maybe?

If you do a google on 'AdInsight', you certainly get a different result.

"GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1" 403 "-" "-"

Why not let them get robots.txt anyway? Poke a <Files> hole for requests using bad IP ranges, and an [L] line for requests that may be blocked via mod_rewrite. (I take an even easier approach: all my RewriteRules are constrained to some extension or other. But that may not work on your site.)

"GET / HTTP/1.1" 302 "-" "BingAdsAdInsightBot"

Ahem cough-cough-cough what's the 302 for?

Are you on a weird host? I've never seen a log entry that didn't give the response size (%b) after the numerical code (%s).

lucy:

- If a bot isn't properly programmed to show a UA, real or faux, it isn't worthy of access to any file, imho. Plus 99.999% of no-UA hits aren't real people in real time anyway. Vamoose!

- MS runs so many bots with so many names/versions from so many sources, my blocked ranges could include employees. So just in case, all MS IPs not ignoring basics and/or not known/allowed bots get 302'd to a no-index troubleshooting page.

- Before pasting the log excerpt, I deleted the date, time, and file size as irrelevant (...you sharp-eyed snoop, you:) I thought about changing the 302 to a 403 before posting, but wanted the info presented to be accurate. The bot did not follow the 302. Some do.

wilderness, I'm not sure if or how "BingAdsAdInsightBot" and "AdInsight" are related.

"AdInsight" per se is now "ResponseTap" providing "voice-centric marketing technology and advanced visitor-level call-tracking to increase sales via the telephone." [crunchbase.com...]

Unless MS/Bing's dabbling in phone call-related analytics vis-a-vis sites? Dunno.

I assume BingAdsAdInsightBot mines data for advertisers of Bing Ads (bingads.microsoft.com)?
