Netscape 5.0 is driving me nuts on my stats. Almost always 1 page view, 90+ bounce rate and very few seconds per visit after I averaged a month and about 600 visits. Does anyone have an idea on what it is? Can't be a browser unless my page doesn't display at all on that.

Are these AOL IP's that are cache the pages and images?

Check the IPs it comes from (are they servers) AND check the browser header fields.

Have some pity. Even my most impoverished Russian robots can manage Netscape 8.

Does "page view" mean human page view (all associated files instantly loaded, ending with the favicon) or robotic page view (the .html file only)?

Thanks guys,
it appears that it is a HEAD and GET from many servers, so a scrapper. What surprised me was that I didn't see that they had taken any images. But now I get it, getting the html file means that Piwik is activated.

I think I have banned Russia and Ukraine. That helped but not enough :)

That explains the 5. Your robots are so poverty-stricken, they're on dialup. The whole point of piwik and similar js-based trackers is that robots don't stay on the page long enough to trigger the script, because the instant they hit the bottom of the page, they're gone. (You do have it way down at the bottom, right?)

FWIW:

- I really doubt it's really Netscape. That's just a name plucked from an array.

- The majority of botnet bots don't launch js, css, don't get graphics, etc. They scrape the raw text.

- A dialup botnet? Nah...

And not much point banning only Russia and Ukraine. Although they are common attackers and scrapers, botnets come from all over. In fact the more internet users in a country the more have viruses the more are compromised and turned into bot zombies. One of my biggest botnet hitters is, in fact, USA. I do wish I could block it! :(

But you gotta admit it's a great mental picture. "Who is this person spending exactly five seconds on each of my pages before moving systematically along to the next" :)
