Some Opera Mobile user agents

I was contacted by a marketing guy and an engineer at Opera on Friday offering to help me make more accurate definitions for most Opera Mobile user agents. They are apparently on a mission to make Opera more widely recognized in things like web stats reports and by webmasters trying to ID browsers. I asked Bill if he would be interested in me posting these UAs and he said yes. Even though they are not search engine UAs, perhaps knowing that these are in fact legit Opera Mobile UAs will help us better distinguish between a real web browser and a bot. These are their top 20 UAs per OS from one of their own web servers. They will be sending more over time. They just didn't want to overwhelm me since I'll be integrating them all into my browscap.ini and related files.

These are their top 20 UAs per OS from one of their own web servers.
They have to collect UAs from their logs? Don't they know their own software?

Considering it's OEM'd out to various vendors, how would they know all the OEM UAs otherwise if they weren't being provided back to Opera?

For instance, even with that big list they missed this obvious variation:

Opera/9.00 (Nintendo Wii; U; ; 1309-9; en)

Here's the most comprehensive Opera list I've ever seen, perhaps Gary can get his Opera connection to validate this list?

Opera might be able to help with the real problem here, but I doubt it.

The problem is that hardly any of the phone makers seem to understand or comply with the 'standards' for defining user-agent strings. In fact, it's common for the entire format of the string to change between one model of phone and the next model from that same maker. They're obviously not considering the difficulty they create for Webmasters, network gateways, or anyone else... or perhaps given their short time-to-market cycles, they simply don't care.

This isn't Opera's fault, but maybe they can help to educate the phone makers.

Just as an example from the list above, we have:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; PPC) Opera 8.65 [en]

Now I have to ask, really, why on earth is MSIE 6.0 in there at all? The UA should be
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; <<device name>> Opera/8.65; PPC; Windows CE; en)
-or perhaps-
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; Windows CE; PPC; en) Opera/8.65
but it should certainly *not* be that Frankenstein combination with MSIE 6.0 in there.

Jim,

You know as well as I do that the Frankenstein combos are there to make sure that the browser can access sites that limit themselves to MSIE or FF only.

I'll see what I can do, Bill. I'm also going to try getting one of them to sign-up here. I know it's likely a long-shot, but there's nothing to be lost in trying.

I saw that Wii UA in my logs the other night. Why are you saying it's an Opera UA? Is Opera the browser that's embedded in the Wii?

Yes, I have a Wii and it has Opera on it which is why I knew your list was incomplete the minute I saw it! :)

Cool, thanks Bill!

BTW, I never said the list was complete. It's got the top 20 UAs for each platform. I've been told there are tons more UAs, but they didn't want to overwhelm me in my attempts to integrate all of this into my files.

It is incredible there's not more of an attempt to standardize these mobile UAs. I understand part of the reason why they can be so wacky. And that's why the mobile section of my files is so incomplete. I've got thousands of mobile UAs, each one just slightly different, but it's far too overwhelming a task to try and create patterns for them all without making the files so large they adversely impact web server performance.

Bill, is this one of the Wii UAs you've seen? It showed up in my logs from last week.

Opera/9.50 (Nintendo DSi; Opera/483; U; en-GB)
