My understanding is that this is a "virtual presence location" tool (hence "vpl").

I believe it enables users of certain chat software to see when other users are on a website.

As far as I am aware it only ever requests the file _vpi.xml (which few sites will have).

I wouldn't say it was malicious, just stupid and irritating.

But as always I am happy to be corrected.
