Emails flooded my 404 inbox this evening.

66.249.85.*** tried to load example.com/subfolder/hoax.com which produced all images and other stuff to fail and cause separate 404s. Normally, my custom 404 works fine. I am yet to check why it failed this time.

User Agent = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12) Gecko/20080201 Firefox/2.0.0.12

IP belongs to Google.

Why would they try to load such thing?

In addition, about an hour later, same IP has requested .../noexist_#*$!#*$!#*$!#*$!#*$!#*$!.html (some scrambled numbers and letters were in place of Xs)

while the identification came out as User Agent = Google-Sitemaps/1.0

Is this something known?

do a backlink check and see if someone is spamming links pointed at you. Or if you have the addreaded "this site is harmful" moniker on google.

Are your websites (or you) part of the Google Sitemap program?

Merely speculation here but, could be the toolbar beta 5 version enhancement looking for default server 404 pages.
