Referer is Google with no search string

http://www.google.com/ - that's the whole URL

Been seeing hits from various IPs with a referer of "http://www.google.com/" (or regional google domain). No query string, no search string.

Many are clearly spammers of some sort. However, a good chuck of these exhibit normal browsing behavior (including requesting files that are simply not accessible to bots).

Is anyone aware of browsers or plugins that strip out the search string from the HTTP Referer?

Thanks! I completely forgot about that feature. Haven't used it since 1999 :)
