No UA, no robots.txt

Just came across this new, innovative, Web 2.0 service, who will highlight a section of text on any web page, which they thoughtfully host on their own website as a copy.

The request which nabs the page has no UA and no referer; robots.txt was not fetched; I was unable to find any information on their website about robots.txt policy.

Fortunately (for me) they don't get any further than my bad bot trap.

zCat,
You have an IP range?
Didn't have any luck at Google whilst looking for log entires.

It appears to (at least in concept) be close to MSSmartTags ;)

Came from 70.87.68.#*$!, looks like server hosting. The IP address is that of the server hosting the website.

I've got two servers there. I've actually banned the entire host except for the IP Address ranges used by tech support and the security scanner. It's rather embarrassing when you have to blacklist your own host. But I suppose in this case once the sale went through it was inevitable.

Gary,
I may be required to do something similar.
My host has two servers, one of which is planet.
I've been on their alternative server for more than six years, however eventually my sites will get moved over to planet.

The sad part is their service is excellent. Enough about that I suppose.

Whatever is the drawback, service is really very nice.

Whatever is the drawback, service is really very nice.

The drawback is in possibly having your websites associated with spammers and harvesters, due to the providers lack of willingness to follow and enforce sound UAG/TOS.
