I was unable to determine a settting option to local drives.
In the end the tool browsed three pages on a search I attempted providing three successive attempts with one UA and then another three successive attempte with a Java UA.
I'm providing one of each succession for an example:
My IP range - - [07/Apr/2006:23:16:17 -0700] "GET mysite/myfolder/mypage.html HTTP/1.1" 200 9071 "-" "Mozilla 4.0(compatible, MSIE6.0; Win NT 5.1)"
My IP range - - [07/Apr/2006:23:20:21 -0700] "GET /myfolder/mypage.html HTTP/1.1" 403 - "-" "Java/1.5.0_06"
Why did you think this program is a search engine spider?
I did not.
I was merely providing the UA under the premise that it may appear as such. (I would have interpreted it as so, had it not been my own IP range and had the software installed.)
I archive/digitize previously published older articles. (somewhere currenlt exceeeding 10k in RTF files and growing daily.)
My desire with the software was in expanding the capability of my search options of my localized data.
I am disappointed in that capability.
Don
Looks like a personal search engine spider/crawler/robot/automaton to me.
From its site:
"[W]ith Explore XY you're not searching, you're exploring. What you get isn't a list of search-like results that can be manipulated or ranked by invisible third parties..."
Not searching but exploring? LOL. Marketing. Gotta love it.
Coincidentally, from an XY Marketing VP, posting on Meetup in last month (G cache):
"EXPLORE XY is an application that "reads" approximately 1000 web documents an hour, take notes, then correlates the notes into facts and conclusions for the user."
Oh, great. Another your-bandwidth-is-mine-all-mine product.
So-o-o- did it ask for and/or heed robots.txt? (crosses fingers)
.
P.S. to webinator
Are you from/with that search app company?
BTW, we do heed robots.txt.
The application is a very powerful, bandwidth intensive software which works wonderfully well with any dual core processor - “set it and forget it!”
The reason we used “explore” as opposed to “search” was that the word “search” is too closely connected to “search” engines, which WE ARE NOT. However, the word “explore” denotes a need for patience and open mindedness – positive marketing? We try. We are not an ASP business, we are a small company trying to position our product for marketability. Any support is grateful.
Thank you.
Webinator/Explore XY team.
I am from Explore XY. Pfui, what do you mean by, “... nasty are all apps not identifying themselves, ditto those switching UAs on the fly -- all to fly under radar...”? I do not understand these comments.
If your refer to msg#1 of this thread that I initiated?
The user-agent in the browser portion from the log visits, neither identify your software nor provide a URL to the Explore XY website.
Neither did the software visit my robots.txt, as a result its a bit far-fetched to accept that Explore XY complies with something it has not read!
Pfui was expressing thw ability to change browser User-Agents almost instantly ("on the fly"), it's not a difficult concept to understand and is precisely what the software does in duplicating visits.
webinator, I have a problem with programs/people entering someone else's turf and not identifying themselves. Kind of akin to your initially commenting on Explore XY in this thread and not identifying yourself as being from Explore XY.
Also, did you know that Thunderstone [thunderstone.com]'s "Webinator [thunderstone.com]" Web indexer / search engine is long-established and its name trademarked?
That's why this licensed owner of one of Thunderstone's products is surprised to see you using the name "webinator" here, and definitely in your semi-sig: "Webinator/Explore XY team" -- unless you're from Thunderstone, too.
So again I ask you:
"Are you from/with that search app company?"
In wilderness's original post, I believe he misunderstood where our program acquires information, it is pointed at general web, not at any proprietary personal store.
Let me try to explain, at present the application takes urls discovered from the "X" and "Y" term queries and reads or decomposes them, at approximately 500 urls in 30 mins or until it finds enough information to create correlations between the queried terms. If you are interested in knowing more, please read under "KDV Advisor" at our message board: [explorexy.com...]
No, I am not from Thunderstone. I work for Explore XY (www.explorexy.com), which is wholly owned by Core Relations Development Corp.

"Can I use Explore XY to augment off-line research?
Absolutely. In fact, reports from your explorations can be used to help guide, focus and speed any off-line research project."
end of quote
Perhaps in addition to being stupid?
I'm incapbale of understanding what I read as well ;)
The above from your own onlinw FAQ and yet I was unable to find a setting in the software for exploring "off-line". AKA local file stores.
BTW, my local files have some very unique correlations which would have made your software both useful to myself while displaying the software's unique capabilities.
HAD such a capability existed!
"Can I use Explore XY to augment off-line research?
> "...off-line research" refers to our own proprietary infobase which is derived from content discovered and acquired from the general web, and stored on the user's hard-drive for offline use (N.B. this happens only if the user chooses the "save" function). Once the EXY infobase is created, the data can be accessed and correlated by the Knowledge Discovery Vehicle (KDV) while off-line. That is what we meant by "off-line", as opposed to the ability to access any other local file stores. Please accept our humble apologies if it came across differently.
I completely agree that the inclusion of personal info stores can create very relevant and fascinating correlations. However, this is the first (beta) release, I'm sure you can imagine some of the innovative features and functionalities we have planned for future versions.
