miniRank/2.0 (miniRank; [minirank.com...] website ranking engine)
65.95.2.***
***.sympatico.ca

It read robots.txt and obeyed it. It only took one file, the default root page, so I can't say just how robots.txt-compliant it really is. But there's a link to their website in the ua which to me is always a good sign.

The only thing that seems odd is you have to type in a specific URL and then you see a page that tells how your site ranks amongst all the other sites in the SEs db. I just don't see how that's useful to know. Not that I put much stock in it but I'd rather know my PR on Google than where I rank on miniRank.

Is there more to this than meets the eye?

So far, I've seen it from 3 completely different IP addresses. Can it be working from people's desktops? The first two just grabbed robots.txt and the index page. The third started crawling more pages.

Are any of the ranges you've seen it from similar to what I posted? Thanks.

Yep, I also saw 65.95.2.* as well as one from 64.230.* and 70.53.*, all of which are related to Bell/Sympatico ISP in Canada. I know Sympatico dynamically assigns IP addresses, but these are very different ranges.
