Only if they are spidering too many pages.

There are some old thread on users with random characters for the UA.
One one time it was fairly regular occurence.

The random characters in the ua would be reminding me of some inexperienced nosey nate

Yes, I've noticed the Random user agent making a comeback as well.
They tend to be e-mail harvesters bots run by spammer/phishers. I proved this point by feeding them a Project Honeypot page for a while whenever they requested my guestbook, and sure enough, spam was soon received by the e-mail address that they harvested from the honeypot page.
