Yesterday colo-69-31-80-250.pilosoft.com made 5656 hits at my site! They used different browsers all the time, Opera, MSIE, Mozilla and even Googlebot and Inktomi from Mac OS, Windows 98, NT, ME, FreeBSD and other operating systems. Seems odd!

Does anyone know who they are? Should I block them?

I originally posted this in wrong forum, Tracking and Logging, Can a moderator delete that thread.

The backbone provider a pest (which I've mentioned previously.)
69.31.80.250

Whether you should deny them or not?
Depends is the provider is beneficial or detrimental to your site (s) or whether you feel this particualr visit to be an intrusion rather than a genuines visitor.
No webmaster is capable of making these determinations for another webmaster! I don't know the goals or market desired for your website (s), nor you mine.

Don

BTW, I've had this particular backbone's range and every other range of same provider denied since early December of 2004.

I've had problems last week with another IP from pilosoft.com with the same characteristics (rotating User Agent) suggesting that it is a webscraper. The perp requested robots.txt but the UA for the robots.txt was Opera.

The solution: deepsixed the range.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't recall this bot, but the way I look at it... I maintain webservers for *my* commercial interests. Crawlers that display and maintain a win-win relationship are always welcome. I don't maintain resources solely for someone else's commercial interests however if there is no upside. Forged user agents particularly frost me and I deal with these harshly. I have bot traps and hand edit the apache config file regularly. Ultimately, I consolidate the deny from ip's as I can into firewall blocks and hosts.deny to keep the apache config as lean as I can.
