inktomi2-lan.server.ntl.com, in case it wasn't to clear in the description...

Anyone? I looked at the ntl page, couldn't really find anything...is ink using this to run a spider? or else why does the url look like that after tracing the ip?

NTL is a large popular ISP in England. Several of our regulars use NTL. One would think it is *not* Ink.

I don't think it is Ink, but there has always been a nagging suspicion about them based on:

NTL does run an Inktomi serviced engine (with a couple of things that make it unique from other Inktomi spots).

Why inktomi in the domain name?

Brett I heard a whisper from a little bird that INK has some spiders that run from ISP's. First I heard was in South America. most of the time it has been ISP's that have INK as a DB for their Users.

This was what I found...and I already posted how the ip resolves once it is traced.

That was what got me going, was the fact that inktomi was in the ip when it was traced...I wondering, not worried, but very curious...

Does ink have a registered trademark to their name? If it isn't ink, then maybe we should let them know about this, could the other company get in trouble for infringing on intelectual property or something?

I'm 99% certain that this is just an example of one of Inktomi's infrastructure products [inktomi.com].

I have seen large numbers of hits from these addresses as well:

inktomi2-not.server.ntl.com
inktomi1-car.server.ntl.com
inktomi2-mid.server.ntl.com

I think that Inktomi have provided the products and they are named accordingly. Nothing more suspicious than that.

The 3 character (ren in this case) is the town that the service is based in England - it *is* an isp.

Whew, thanks. I am beginning to get suspicious of everything I see, if it doesn't follow what I have mistakenly lodged in my head as a "normal" pattern...

But then again, when I start spidering other stuff, I'll probably end up giving myself away by behaving so predictably..:)
