I've stopped counting the number of times I've seen a UA with YComp in it lately because I can't count that high. I can't seem to find out what it's for though. Does anyone here know? TIA.

Some examples:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; AOL 7.0; Windows 98; DigExt; YComp 5.0.2.4)
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows 95; YComp 5.0.2.4)
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; AOL 6.0; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90; YComp 5.0.2.4)

most probably just some software that added its string to the useragent
registry settings of msie
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform)

Yep, most likely "Yahoo companion"....something that comes along with Y! messenger....sort of like the G toolbar but been around longer.....maybe it's this.

I want to find out what software is doing this and I can't seem to find out anything about it. The thing is, it's showing up in way more than the few examples I showed above. And from lots of different IP Addresses. In all I saw 41 new UAs that had YComp in it this week alone, each one from a different IP Address.

Thanks, brotherhood_of_lan. That's something solid I can checkout. I'll let you all know what I find.

You all are the greatest, in so many ways.

I just installed Yahoo Companion and sure enough YComp shows up in my UA now.

Thank you so very much. :)

I had a SBC/Yahoo connection for a few days. Hopefully again before weeks end :-(
Neither name sits very well in my mouth ;-) It seems I'm choking from eating my own words.
1) I've had an ax to grind with Yahoo since my internet activity began six years ago. The latest was in November of 2001 when I moved my three discussion groups from Yahoo to my webserver.
2) SouthWest Bell is irresponsible to webmasters in their hunger for bandwidth $$ without monitoring or responsibility for the bandwidth users.

GET USE TO IT!
SBC/Ameritec are merging services and products and promoting their DSL under the SBC/Yahoo brand.

My recent account branded both my UA and name branded my IE browser.
It was very simple to search and delete the rgeistry key.

BTW I had a recent visit to my robots text and a single other page from a IncyWincy person however it was not designated as so.

Perhaps I'm confused but how is this related to Yahoo Companion (YComp)?

Yahoo Companion is installed as part of the SBC/Yahoo DSL software.
