Had something called Orangebot pick up a page last night. Anyone know what/who/why?

Showed up at my site today, too. Can't find anything on it. Hit my pages listed at DMOZ and didn't crawl beyond that. Can't get any tracert or lookup info on it.

That's all I was able to dig up. Did a search for Techknow Software and came up with a site selling automotive mechanic training software out of Kentucky. Also tried www.techknow.com and came up with a web services/software company in Illinois. I didn't see any logfiles indexed by Google with "Orangebot" in them.

Maybe it was this [c-base.de] little fella :).

Anyone tried to enter the IP into the Adress Bar? It gets you to a 'welcome to your new web site' page, which is powered by Ensim who themselves are a provider of hosting solutions.

Service scan of the IP also gets ensim.rackshack.net. Now DNS records mention nv1.net who are an ISP and seem to be closely related to rackshack.net.

Don't ask me why any of these would spider your sites, though. Maybe looking for email adresses?

Same IP 216.127.72.50 hit DMOZ sites, also. Weird, though. One site it visited is listed in DMOZ in two places - it hit that site's index page twice 28 seconds apart and didn't crawl the site any further. Never requested robots.txt. If it was only harvesting emails I don't think it would stop there - those bots usually march through like Roman soldiers. I have a hunch it's just following DMOZ sites (once for every time they're listed?) Just a hunch, though.

<added>yup - just parsed multiple log files more closely and that's exactly what it's doing. Any site listed more than once in DMOZ it followed twice. And it went straight for the exact page(s) listed with DMOZ.</added>

Maybe DMOZ has someone working on building them a link verifier bot like Looksmart has in the "Zealbot". It'd really help clean out some of the wood in there.

Shrug. Will keep my eye on it, and let ya know if anything else weird happens... Interesting to learn that others have the DMOZ situation, too...
