It hit my index page 3 times. One time without an agent. I suspect it may be the real thing (AltaVista). Looking for cloaked sites maybe?

Can't say as I've seen this one yet... real interesting though. Anybody else seen it?

Haven't seen it either but will keep an eye out for it. I won't add anything in so that it can be flagged easier.

There are a few sites hosted on the C block. That doesn't mean that it is not Alta because I think either they or Ink had something similar set up before.

I get this thing coming constantly (maybe 10 times in the past 2 weeks) always identified as "unknown.level3.net"
Did anyone ever figure out exactly what it is?
Thanks,
Mark

I am constantly getting visits from level3.net -- virtually every day.

It's one of my top visitors! I'm kind of disappointed it's not a person coz they seemed real interested in my site!

A Google search finds a homepage for "Level 3 Communications, Inc.", dealing in network services.

I get this one all the time, but from a different IP block. Are any of you seeing the same User-agent shown here? Related thread [webmasterworld.com]

I got tired of this one generating 404 errors and blocked it. But is still comes back daily for the same pages - including the dead ones. Even after months of daily visits, it never learns from 404 or 403 response codes, so I doubt that it belongs to anyone who knows anything about robots. Also, this "unknown.level3" bit in the REMOTE_HOST string is rather unprofessional. Thus, I don't feel bad blocking it without knowing all the details.
