I'm starting to take my site into SEO, level 2, and so I have a number of questions. I think my questions, and the responses, will constitute a basic guide to advanced SEO.
The first question is regarding keyword density. Some posts here warn not to go over 10%. (BTW, what is the optimum?) How is keyword density defined? I would assume that for any word, the formula is number of occurences of that word or phrase / number of total words in page. However, one tool seemed to assess it as number of occurences of that word or phrase / number of occurences of all words that appear more than once. Obviously, there is a big difference between the two formulas.
My next question regards distribution: Keywords are obviously weighted more in the beginning of a page - but is it important that they be evenly distributed throughout the *entire* page? What if you put them in the beginning, and then sneak them into only a few other places.
Thanks in advance to all who respond. I'll post my other questions later.

I'm fairly sure that the majority of questions you may have, have been covered to some degree in past discussions. The best approach I've found to getting more detailed answers is to start with the site search function (upper left corner) and search for the specific topic of your question. If you don't find the answer your looking for, post your question in the original thread, or the forum it is from.
That will *bump* the discussion back to the top of the original form, which will make it much easier for all members to find it. (Giving an older thread a bump also puts it back on the active discussion list)
Creating individual posts for each specific question makes it much easier for everyone.
Following WebGuerrilla’s excellent advise I ran a search for you, and others who may have the same questions, and found these posts. Please feel free to post in any of these previous discussions if you don’t find the answer.

I couldn’t find anything on keyword distribution, specifically. I think that’s a very good questions and I know we’ve gone around it. My simple answer would be the meta tags, title, headings, and depending on how much content you’ll want them spread throughout. When adding keywords to your content I suggest that you make it follow the natural course of conversation and not stuff. Also include in the anchor text of your links, the alt tags of your images. I name images after keywords where appropriate.
You’ll probably find more specific answers if you look up the individual topics, [ i.e. alt tags, headings, title, content].
