I also think Google is unstable at the moment am getting rndom fluctuations in page rank and search results.

Google gives very different results for search engine verification and for link popularity results depending on how your query is structured. For example, if you preface your site with "www" as opposed to just putting in your top level domain (yousite.com), Google will give you accurate results. However, if you do not preface with the host (www), Google will most often report "0" for link popularity, and very random results for search engine verification. Hope this helps.

You're correct that there has_been a problem with a discrepancy in reporting links depending on whether domain.com or www.domain.com was used. It was an issue for quite a while, but is no longer the case.

Google, in their continued efforts to maintain the integrity of their results, recognized the discrepancy and made the necessary corrections. I think it might have been a few months ago, but Google changed it, so that it longer makes any difference.

link:searchengineworld.com = 4,590 links
link:www.searchengineworld.com = 4,590 links

I have a friend who always uses domain.com, yet some people link to him with www.domain.com The links showing for him are 765 either way now.

It's not a bad idea to be consistent, but the results are now the same whether domain.com or www.domain.com is used.

I agree with Marcia that Google has made movements to improve this situation, however, Google has not completely resolved the issue. For many URLs this is still a problem.

Here are two "link" searches from Google... One for Marketleap, and one for Dr. Bobs Delphi Clinic, both with and without the "www.":

I hope Google does resolve this issue, but until then, it is most likely much more accurate to include the "www." portion of the URL. (unless your URL does not start with www, e.g. "groups.google.com")

I have been using Top Dog as a positioning report tool for a long time. Now Tog Dog's results are not accurate. I do manual checks regulary. Some one knows a different positioning report tool with more accurate results/. I need it badly cos it takes a lot of time to create a SRU report doing it manually!!

I find http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/ accurate enough. If you check your site, and then click the result for the different SE's, you will see that it is done in the same way that you would do yourself manualy.

Personaly I like to be able to "see" what a service/pogran does, I don't trust those fully automated things

Google's link search tool doesn't work properly... I don't want to put the domain or URL here, but I did a search like

link:www.domain.com

and got 0 results but when I did a search for "www.domain.com" I got well over a hundred. After visiting a sampling of about ten, every one of the pages contained a hyperlink to "www.domain.com" or similar.

Definitly not Noel. Google is very important and I think the instability is only in periods around the updats. For me it has been stable the last week (witch is not a good thing, since my page rank has droped like everybody elses)
