Do they have any potential?

Is it a good idea for a site to be involved with yahoo webrings?

Anyone have any experience of this?

Could it be of benefit or is it likely to be considered spam and get the site thrown out of the engines??

Did not get thrown out yet, and I've been there since they started them.

However I don't see much traffic from those web rings and I have a full separate page of them...

Many of the better Yahoo web rings require you to post the code on the entry page, and I think that is silly to do so.

Ian, a lot can depend on the type of site. With certain niche markets they work to some degree. I know a couple of people with good rankings, and their traffic and sales come about half and half from search engines and a combination of web rings and link exchanges. It's also choosing the right ones. I've had a few sites on one or two webrings, didn't see any degree of traffic from them - but have seen some from links on similar types of sites. Some are better than others.

I've got a site of my own I'll definitely put onto some web rings because of the nature of the site, specifically because the particular target market is very big on webrings. But it's highly doubful I'd ever put one on the main index page. I would on the index page of a specific subdirectory, though, if it were a very topic-specific webring.
