I am generating a new web site - will my positions be any worse for having an an extended URL string. eg xxxx.com/xxx rather than xxxx.com. Also after submission, how long can I expect to wait until I see some results with some search engines - thanks in advance

Most engines now give less priority to the extended URLs.

If you have

www.myisp.yyy/xxx

it will be given less importance than

www.xxx.yyy

check the search results pages for verification of this.
