Are invisible links ok?

Someone showed me an example of a 2 layered site map they had created for spiders. By using a hidden link to the main homepage of a site.

Is this a valid technique or is it classed as spamming?

But there shouldn't be a problem putting a small text link at the bottom of the home page that said "site map" in size 2 text... very few human visitors would bother with it, spiders could find it, and it would be more likely to pass human review.
