How to name a folder

Hi guys,

I hope you can give me a helping hand here.

I'm about to start building new pages for one of my sites. All these new files will be placed in a separate folder on the server.

The reason I will put all new files in a separate folder is that I don't want to check for and worry about duplicate file names and that I unintentionally overwrite existing pages.

My question is about how I should name the folder I put all the new pages in.

For example:

I could name the folder

'/generalkeyword/'

or simply

'/a/'.

The way I see it, '/generalkeyword/' would look like search engine spam and I don't want that, therefore I would like to name it '/a/'.

What do you guys think?

I would love to hear your thoughts and any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think that as long as you have no more than 1 keyword(phrase) in the URL, either in the domain, folder or page name, this doesn't look as spam. In fact I saw keywords in folder names in bold in some SERPs.

Agree. As long as you don't overdo it, why not?
  • It helps internally when you want to find files fast (scan folder names).
  • Users look to file names for cues as to page relevance when scanning SERP's (improved click thru's).
  • Users also look to file names for nav reasons, i.e., to see where they are inside a site (improved user experience).

But if I put '/generalkeyword/1.html' '/generalkeyword/2.html' '/generalkeyword/3.html' ….. etc as links on one page would renitence of *generalkeyword* consider as spam? Or robots treat URLs differently?
