Have you ever quoted a client to make them #1?

We all know that the #1 spot for a competitive keyword can be fleeting, but has anyone here ever quote a client to have them reach the #1 spot regardless of how long they stay up there? What's a good way to quote a client for that service?

I've offered a handful of clients a quote, payable only if the results are achieved, on getting them the top position in Yahoo and/or Google for target keywords (some are fairly competitive, some are for mid level cities and thus not as competitive). Now I have a client who wants the #1 spot for a fairly competitive keyword and will pay pretty much anything for it. I've thought about simply quoting based on the number of hours it will take me to acquire a significant number of backlinks.

Any thoughts on quoting for this service? Or should it only be based on increasing traffic and conversions?

So you get him to the number 2 spot for this keyword and he doesn't have to pay you ever?

Sign me up for that deal!

I just got burned, during the holidays, by this lady that I performed work for. She paid via paypal $1280 and after christmas her site went back down to within the top 10. She filed a complaint with Paypal and won. I contacted Paypal and told them I want my product back :-) This is why I do not work from home anymore, I can't afford it. She also burned two other individuals, which worked hard along side of me. She stayed at the #1 spot throughout the holidays for a very competitive marketplace, which is what she paid us for and then after the holidays took her money back. Although, it was my error for not insisting she pay by MO or check - however, you throw it out there and hope for the best.
