Local Or Global

I am racking my brain trying to develop some niche based sites, and I had a question concerning geography...

Should I be looking for Niche to promote within my own area or should I shoot globally?

Past suggestions has been to start local with something that I love (um, money?) and grow from there...

using various keyword tools I see that I am limiting myself by going local... should I not concern myself with this at the moment? (It is around 150k searches for local keywords)

Is it easier in the SEO world to promote a local site versus a global site?

Thanks all

Globally, unless you're thinking of developing a major site in a big metro area.

"Niche" already implies a large degree of focus. Add to that the narrowing in focus of a local site, and you're liable to have just too small an audience.

While there are niche topics that can work locally, I think they'd have to broaden out to almost portal-like dimensions to be rewarding.

Thanks for the reply Robert.

Currently my entire focus has been my local state...

I have been wanting to get into the whole social network arena but the traffic is the #1 issue for me..

I DO have a Niche for a worldwide audience, and the site ready to go.

But I already attempted at getting some users with no luck, and it seems im facing that "Nothing here to see so why should I stay" issue...

Do I populate my site with fake accounts and info from other sites / forums to draw more attention?

you could maybe have a look through our Forum Community Building [webmasterworld.com] for some ideas.

this thread could help

there are a bunch of other quality threads in that forum's library [webmasterworld.com] as well
