So I have seen this 100 times, but just need clarification. If I change ANYTHING in the code of my site and the spider sees a different page (from the cache) when it visits, it sends my rank to the bottomless abyss? We change our pages in small ways very often.

Although it could explain alot of poor rankings.

I don't see how this is true as I have a site that requires some content updates, and it still enjoys decent rankings. They aren't the best, but they certaintly aren't at the bottom of the abyss!
