I think I've learned a lot from this forum for the past month, but I've never actually applied any of it! So today, I gave it a go. I thought I'd share my step-by-step process with everyone. I hope you'll help me fill the gaps! :)

So earlier today, just for fun, I googled "widget for sale".

Plenty of results!

I checked the backlinks of #1 site by doing linkdomain:widget.com -widget.com in yahoo.

#1 has 300+ backlinks and has "widget for sale" in title and in <meta tags>.
#2 has 2000+ backlinks!
#5 is one of those BIG ebay type of sites.

...

I noticed the listings have folders. eg; portal.com/category/widget

so linkdomaining that #5 ebay type of site is obviously going to give me MILLIONS of backlinks. The linkdomain: is of no help there! :(

...

Then I remember reading on this forum, the amount of backlinks is irrelevant. Whats important is how many backlinks #1 has for specfic keyword "widget for sale"?

hmm .. but it will take forever to manually check +300 backlink anchor txt!

Instead, I looked for seo competition for "widget for sale".

I did the intitle:"widget for sale" and had 60+ results. Some were on irrelevant topics sites, some were blogs ... but #1 widget.com is not even in top 10! What gives?

inanchor:"widget for sale" reveals similar results.
No sign of #1 widget.com competitor!

So let me get this straight... I've got almost no competitors for my "widget for sale", and yet widget.com is #1 for it. That makes no sense!

is inanchor: that inefficient? I don't get it.

So I went to the bottom of this, I decided to check widget.com backlinks manually.

...

Here's what I did again:

linkdomain:www.widget.com -www.widget.com.

300+ backlinks on Yahoo

80+ backlinks on MSN

10 on Google...

Um.. right. I'll go with Yahoo, as I remember was suggested.

...

So I manually check for anchor txt "widget for sale" expecting widget.com to be linked...

But big surprise, I find none! Maybe 90% link directly to "www.widget.com".

"Wow! I think I found the holy grail!" I thought. Does that mean with a bit of work I could easily rank first?

What escapes me is, how the heck did widget.com rank #1 for "widget for sale" when it only has the keyword in title and meta tags.. AND NO ANCHOR FOR "widget for sale" in its 300+ backlinks?

Theoretically, if I get about, um, say 10 backlinks with "widget for sale" as anchored txt right now, and slowly build more links in 2 months using an old irrelevant domain (no sandbox) will I rank first?

It can't be *that* easy. No way.

I'm sure I missed something.

This concludes my first try at SEO! It was interesting to accidently find a possibly niche keyword, and a lot of fun to check the competition. :)
