If I may draw on your experience,

1. which of the free statistics providers would you reccommend? thecounter.com? or is there better available.

2. Can you advise me on an alternative to 'free', i.e. CHEAP software. and easy to use.

Many thanks in advance

Analog is probably one of the best freebies around:

Here's a couple other threads that may help

Many thanks oilman. I ever know so many existed. The only trouble with analog for me is that it doesn't track referring pages. theCounter.com does this 'basically' well but I can't help feeling that I need more info to study and modify my sites' structures.

Thanks again.

thanks froggyman

just signed up for one of my 'experimental' websites, see how it goes - don't like the idea of displaying a button BUT also don't like the thought of paying $18 per month ;)

>it doesn't track referring pages.

Webalizer [mrunix.net] is another free stats program and it does track referring pages. Between Analog and Webalizer you can find out most anything you need in a free analyser. Beyond that you will probably have to go to a paid program.

analog does track referring pages. As ive said many times and Woz suggests above, you can do just about anything with Analog. Its flexibility is the key. It can also track refering keywords and phrases. However is does require some (minimal) comfort with DOS programs to set it up. It also dosent require you to change your pages in any way and depend on another server. We have tried other programs but always came back to Analog. Bascially with others the main thing you are paying for is "looks" and hand holding, which in the end detracts from functionality, speed, and flexibility. We also use AnalogX's DNS resolving program with it to spped up resolving in a major way.

Analog is a beauty because of the simplicity with which it handles multiple domains on a virtual server - it's customisation is definitely the key.

now i know why analog doesn't report on my referrers - my host does not add the refferer to the logs.

I got a lot to learn!

thanks for all advice in this thread - very much appreciated.
