I get this too!

Any thoughts on this (I keep banging on about Canonical urls) but it could be something else I guess!

Hi

Post 7 of the following thread basically might explain what you need to know:-

[webmasterworld.com...]

There are also lots of threads at WebmasterWorld about Canonical urls:-

[google.com...]

It may be that your subpage is more relaevant for the term searched, your homepage is then shown as a second match.

i had concidered this but when you search for domain your home page should come in above, i may be wrong but i`ve never come accross it before.
the main thing that is concerning me is that they are not updating my home page!

Sorta along the lines of what Mack said, it is probably the case that the two pages are still seen as very relevant to the search, AND, either:
1) their algo got tweaked in a way that favors the subpage for the search currently;
2) some new factor is positively affecting the subpage;
3) some new factor is dampening the homepage (e.g., not much going on there in a while?).

Just some thoughts, FWIW.

PS, stevelibby per the other questions above, are both of the homepage and subpage listings with (or without) the "www.", or does one have "www." and the other not?

Talking about www. versus non www.

Looking at your search results, do you see:

www.subpage.com
--> homepage.com

subpage.com
--> www.homepage.com

www.subpage.com
--> www.homepage.com

subpage.com
--> homepage.com

The first two examples are bad because they show that the SE's have indexed two versions of your pages.

The second two are good because they suggest that your site has been set up properly, (hopefully) using only one version (www or non-www) and redirecting the other version to your preferred version.

Also, you said you were searching for your domain. What format are you using when searching on your domain? with http? with www? or just the domain name?
