keyword density ... does it matter or not?

I recently IMed bakedjake to ask if he uses a KWD tool or calculates it himself and he said that he doesn't really pay attention to it anymore and that it just doesn't matter that much anymore.

Would you agree or disagree? Why or why not? If KWD matters to you, what do you think the optimum KWD is? 3-10%? 5-20%?

Is it just that the ideal keyword density is to use the keyword as much as possible in youir copy so long as it sounds good/natural? Or better to look at the big picture overall and not stress about KWD?

Thanks!

hmacdermott, you IM'd BakedJake, got an answer, and then ask the rest of us to confirm/deny, huh? Hmmm.

Well, my answer is: Whatever Jake says. ;-)

Perhaps one more thought: Rather than relying on others' notions of some 'ideal' kw density, how about evaluating what the top players in your space are doing?

There is no ideal kw density, as far as I can tell.
