Making Minor Changes

Making Changes and Then Changing Back

Hi

I have a #3 ranking on my target keyword but would like to change my title. Well, just add three words to my title at the end. I have a lot of quality links so I am pretty sure that I am o.k.

But I am curious if I could drop way down by just adding to the title? The reason I want to is because I think it will get me more traffic.

If I did the change and got negative results and then put my old title back would I automatically move back up to my old ranking? Or does the Google algorithm watch for tweaking of titles and descriptions? Not sure. I could see how this could be picked up on as over optimization. Or am I overly paranoid?

Anyone have any experience with these type of changes?

Thanks

By adding to the title you may rise in the serps or drop. I guess it all depends on the exact term a searcher is likely to use. If your title is closer to the exact term used then you may indeed increase in position. If however your extra words are diluting your title and making it less like the search term then you coucl well drop down in the results.

Reverting back to your old title should in effect make your site recover it's origional raking, but dont bet on it. It may take a little time.

What you need to remember is there are so many factors at play all the time that any changes you see may or may not be as a result of your page title change.

Mack.

Thanks for the help. Its never clear what will happen
so I will have to think about it a little more.
A slight drop may still mean more traffic if my title causes me to get a higher CTR.

Speaking of CTR I could try my idea on adwords first to see what the difference in CTR is for a different ad. If it really is significant then it would be worth it.
