They're both pretty shaky. Alexa is interesting on traffic, but really easy to manipulate by just one person. Pagerank is trying to rate "importance" by counting links, not traffic. Taken together, they sort of give you an idea, but you could have a well regarded site on a subject that no one cares about that has decent pagerank and is in the top 50,000 on Alexa because it's owner visits all the pages frequently.

Alexa used to be somewhat reliable as an indicator in days gone by ... But now, since black hats came up with software that uses proxies to hit a website (in order to boost Alexa rankings), it is really not of much use anymore ...

I have heard most people use alexa.
If there is nothing else out there, this must be the closest to a REAL indicator of traffic etc.

IMO Alexa seems easily manipulated and I don't give it any personal relevance, I've even seen a program online that can be purchased to improve your Alexa rankings.
