putting sites on different hosts

as a general rule of thumb, would SEO'ers advise webmasters to spread their sites onto different hosts and totally different IP blocks?

I have three sites on one host that have all been hit hard since Allegra and this is one of the final "variables" that I am considering changing. To leave my main site where it is and move my other two to other hosts.

I think you answered your question yourself. Seperate IPs hosting whatever you can to take away the risk.
