Page jumps and internal anchor text

still a good idea?

If you have a fairly long page (500+ words), it seems logical to use an anchor jump link at the bottom of the page, which takes the user to the top of the page again. From a usability viewpoint, I think this is fine.

But this also has SEO benefits since it would be an easy way to get a keyphrase hyperlinked.

I've done this in the past, but not recently. Is this still effective? I wonder how many are still doing it?

Let me explain a bit better. I might have a page containing info on red widgets and blue widgest. I want to optimise for both, so I want to use link text with both phrases.

One way of doing this is to create anchors for the different sections on the page. One anchor for the red widget section of text, another anchor for the blue widget section. That way, I can hyperlink "blue widgets" to the same page, and have it still make sense to the reader because it's just a page jump. Similarly, I can hyperlink "red widgets" on the same page.

In this way I can use link text to optimise for both phrases on the same page.

Does anyone think this method is ineffective? I know it's worked in the past, but not so sure now.
