Hi,
I have a question. If I have two domain names e.g.
www.abc.com and www.ab.com pointing to the exact same web server, would this cause any problems from an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) standpoint.
I'd be grateful for any of your thoughts on this.

Generally it's no problem to point the domains, but you only want to promote one of them. If you have both names resolving for the same content you could run into duplicate content issues. You can point as many domains as you like.

It is generally agreed that having a dedicated IP for a domain helps its rankings.

That being said it is only one of a hundred factors that go into ranking a site.

If you have the means, get a dedicated IP for each, but I wouldn't sweat it or pay extra for such a small factor.

Be more leary of dupe content and run of site cros links.

Can someone explain the difference in "resolving" and "pointing"?

Domain resolving takes a text domain and ties it to the IP address. For example, while you wait for your domain name to propagate, you can still access your site via your IP address.

Domain pointing redirects (points) one domain to another. For example, if you have www.yourdomain.com. You can point www.yourdomain.net and www.yourdomain.info to your .com site. You can point any domain that you own, these are just for example.

Hope this helps.
