I'm in a competitive market so I have really niche keywords that I want to use. But there is no easy way to put them on the main home page. They speak about specific products I offer, and the keywords are covered well but on the product pages themselves. These product pages are produced by a remote (different domain name) php link inside a frame. This won't get crawled, right?
Do doorway pages work, or are they more harm than good.
Also, how much stock should I put in KEI? Is it possible to do well with a low KEI keyword?
Any assistance would be appreciated.

You really don't want to clutter the home page with those secondary keywords. It's not the home page you want ranking for those.

They will if the framesets are optimized. They probably will even if the framesets are not optimized. The problem is, they won't rank for anything unless they can stand alone on their own. What I mean by that is they have their own navigation (typically a footer with text links) and can function as stand alone pages. Even then, they won't perform as well as they could if part of a site outside of frames.
I'd build individual framesets for each main category. Then I'd build some supporting pages for those framesets. You need to structure the site around that content that is coming in the frameset.

I typically don't pay attention to those numbers. If those secondary keywords are going to bring qualified leads, what is the value of those leads?
Framesets are still a no-no from an accessibility standpoint. Unless of course you've addressed all of those issues. Most don't. Search engines don't really like them either but there are ways to get those framesets to pull their weight. ;)
