I heard that links from slashdot help quite a bit. What I can't figure out is why people go to Slashdot. The site seems sloppy and difficult to navigate.

not really you set it up the way you want it so you get the stuff your interested in only.
its more forum than a proper site IMO.

If slashdot links to you your site will get a ton of traffic and most people don't have hosting accounts that can handle that kind of traffic and they get shut down by the provider for using too much bandwidth or your site just slows down to a halt under the preasure.
