Thanks.
Learn about what Google and Yahoo look for when indexing a page. There are some differences in what they look for (I am not referring to contentof a page here). Secondly, build a 'static' sitemap, make I easier for the crawlers to index all of your pages.
Make sure your pages do not have the same title or description throughout the site - many people make this mistake.

Am new to web technology.
But already hv a site which we paid others to do using php/mysql. Am tasked to maintain n upkeep it.
Therefore wud like to see my site shows up in the search engines. But there are too many abreviations which i hope u guys can spelt out for me.
What is BOT, Pr 4 or 5...Any other gd links/thread to read?

The site has a sitemap, and I have several backlinks including a couple from PR4/5 pages (industry related).
I'm gonna post a few bits of info about my site in the hope that somebody can say whether anything is a good or bad way of promoting it.
-There are no frames anywhere
-all pages are php, using 'include' to put the same header and footer on each page (as well as several other uses throughout the site).
-New pages are added at an average rate of 1 per day. EAch new page is the same in layout but different in content.
-I have probably 20+ industry related links to the site and several related links on it.
-Each page is <20k with most more like 10k
They are the main things I can think of so if anything seems amiss I would apreciate knowing! I can't post the url or content but lets just say the site allows widget owners to advertise their widget and each widget advertised has its own page. PM me if anyone wants teh url as and critique on the site itself is also more than welcome.
One last thing - It has been online for about 5 months - so with no real googlebot activity still do you think I am sandboxed? If so is there anything I can do?
I really need to get some genuine traffic to the site (not ppc) so any advice anyone can offer will be greatly received!
Thanks again.
I have around 4 sites that have been around for several years (Site has been redesigned, but the branding i.e. Domain Name has stood it ground)
Having done a few new sites using many of the same methods and definitly not a Newbie to SEO I have also had problems gettings the newer sites indexed, It seems the best thing to do is put it live, get a couple of decent links and then leave it..
Anyone remember Field of Dreams, "If you build it, they will come" Just Google takes Six months or so.....
I do SEO for a living (full-time job) and have been doing web marketing for some 9 years now. Now having said this, if you ask 10 seo 'experts' on how to optimize a site you will get ten different ways of doing it. When I provide advice is based on my experience - search for 'sports supplies' in google and among the top five results you will find a company with a ssww url listed - that's my work.
Do not confuse PageRank with natural search listings. PageRank helps in the sense that your site is listed in another site and might send traffic your way. It also help, IF the other site has a PR of 5+ (important site in the eyes of Google) then Google will follow the links (if it is not a link farm) faster.
Some rules that have worked for me in getting sites ranked high in natural searches at Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, etc.
1. Title of your page
2. Description of the page (describes the content of the page and of course will have keywords from your title),
3. keywords that match the content of the page.
Now, many say that Google does not take into account keywords and I might agree with that - but consider it an exercise for the other SE that do take keywords into account.
The title and description of each one of your pages should match the content of the particulaer page - if you use the same title and/or description in all your pages it could be interpreted as you trying to "keyword spam" a crawler.
I run affiliates programs and it never ceases to amaze me how many people leave the "New Page" as the title of a page... or have the same title and description in all of the pages of their site, then wonder why they are not indexed!
Optimize your images - if you are showing a digital camera insert that in the 'alt. text" of the image - Yahoo loves that stuff.
Use anchor text in the content of your pages (anchor text is a link to another page - example, if you sell computers and describe this on your home page, then link the word computer to the section you have about computers).
Do not jump off the roof if your PR goes up or down - it happens, especially when Google does its 'dances' 3 or 4 times a year. One particular 'dance' happens on or about December 14 - 17 every time without failing.
Unfortunately we are not allowed to include our email or urls here - but if you follow the google search term above just send an email to glamadrid care of that company - I will get it and get back to you.
Hope this helps.
