1 seems tidier, and less spammy, so inclined to go for it unless method 2 offers more return. Not interested in capturing search phrase "keyword-related-term".

You should still keep the paths short. But, you should also consider long term site structuring. If you have a site that should be logically broken down into sub-directories, then by all means do so.
The weighting of those pages will be affected by more than their position in the site structure. Your internal linking structure will be the primary factor in all of this along with IBLs (Inbound Links) to those pages.
Personally I would choose...
www.example.com/keyword/related
or...
www.example.com/keyword/related/
There is a difference in the above two addresses. One uses content negotiation (no extensions) the other puts the related at the sub-directory root level instead of page level.
