OK so I went to overture and they said "keyword keyword" was searched for ~4000 times in December

I wrote an article on that topic and now I am Number #1 ( on google ) for that combo

3 days go by and only 5 related referalls for the query

did I misunderstand something here?

Bad or No meta description and or title on the page?

Does the SERP show the additional info or just your url?

Was it a "fad" keyword combo that is simply no longer searched for? This may have been a busy term only during the X-mas season.

Are you site stats working...

its a product related search so christmas may have been an issue

> Are you site stats working...

Are you still #1 for that keyword keyword?

If the keyword(s) search brings up other search results like Froogle, your rank would actually be #4. Perhaps visitors are more interested in buying than reading.

Overture's tool often condenses referrals - plurals get included with singular, misspellings are mixed in with the correct spellings, and compound words are included with multiple words.

An example is cell phone, cell phones, and cellular phone. If you look those up in the O KW tool, you get the same results.

I would guess that you picked a fairly non-competitive version - especially based on your statement: "I wrote an article on that topic and now I am Number #1"

Most competitive terms wouldn't be this easy to acquire.

yes its a very noncompetitive area only ~30000 results for the combination. Which is why I was stoked I found it.

as far as stemming -> the keywords wouldn't be affected by stemming as its for a particular brand and product.

its basically two brand names put together

ok well today I looked at the google AdWords traffic estimator and it correctly predicted that I would get no traffic.

so the lesson learned is check both overture and adwords and adjust expectations accordingly.
