The smartest way to be seen by the search engines is to get free or paid directory listings from quality web directories such as Yahoo and Dmoz.

Any service that submits your site to "10,000 search engines" or whatever is a waste of money.

As far as using PPC, such as Overture or Google Adwords - you need to be very selective of your keywords and make sure you exclude words that will not bring you quality visitors.

Inktomi (r.i.p) worked for my small business clients but the free Yahoo search has made me stop paying anyone for inclusion.

There are very few real site providing SERPs. I imagine that there are charts or links on the latest who-supplies-whom somewhere on these boards, and that information is certainly avaiable.

And, everything that Patrick.. said!
