Negative keywords are important to make a campaign cost efficient. Let's start building a list of words that can be used across many products and services

free (beware of conflicting with your own keywords e.g. "risk free")

Please everyone, read that again.

If you offer a "keyword free trial", don't use the negative keyword free.

I think many people have gotten to the point where they have a huge list of negative keywords that go into every group without thinking about it, that they are actually conflicting with their keywords instead of making custom negative keywords lists based off the actual keywords in the group.

eWhisper:

Why would you want to exclude "site" and "inurl"? Take the following scenario:

- My competitor has the domain www.keyword1-keyword2.com
- We share keyword1 and keyword2
- A user knows my competitor, but not me
- He searches for "keyword1 site:keyword1-keyword2.com"

Why shouldn't my ad for keyword1 not appear in the SERPS?

Why would you want to exclude "site" and "inurl"

If you've been reading some of the recent studies about how "joe consumer" has a hard time telling advertising from natural SERPS

[webmasterworld.com...]

I'd say it's a pretty safe bet they aren't doing "site" and "inurl" searches. Of course if you "play" in a very technical or specialized field that may not be the case.

But would it hurt? Maybe I get a positive impression on one or two of the tech-savy surfers?

For a keyword involving a topic on webmasterworld, and several other forums, the -site increased CTR 4.5% because impressions fell by a significant amount. This lead to the ppc price being much less expensive because of the higher CTR.

If there is a site that people regularly use site search for, and aren't looking for ads, but only for the site's info, removing a site from the list works wonders.

This can also be done by using the site's name as a negative keyword as well. (i.e. -webmasterworld).

Makes sense. Never thought about this aspect. Thanks.
