Someone wrote a really good step by step guide on how to get your site ranked high in the search engines. I know I have seen it in this forum before, does anyone remember where the thread is or the link to the page.

Or to anything newer.... are there ways to get rated high in the search engines without paying them?

Try looking thru this one:

[webmasterworld.com...]

An excellect post done by Mack entitled :"Beginners guide to web promotion."
Getting started (2004)

Also contains three other very good links. Check 'em out.

I believe there is another thread somewhere, but if memory serves me correctly, it is now somewhat outdated.

Maybe you're looking for the ever-popular [webmasterworld.com...] That is a couple years old, but the basics remain valid. (I do wonder, though, what the percentage of people using only 56kb modems is now.)

oodles and oodles.
While dsl and cable and such are definitely on the rise, lots of folks still tap their fingers and grit their teeth as they endure that daily soap opera ... "As the Pixels Churn"

I agree with you by instinct, and I design my sites thinking of dial-up AOL users. But, I just haven't seen stats recently, and bet there are less oodles than there were when the 2002 post was made.
