I recently tuned up a friends site to help improve rankings and overlooked the loooooong title! (hanging my head in shame) But it had lotsa keywords (said defensively!) and they are the first few words in the title... Different SEs index different lengths, some as few as about 60 characters and some as many as 110, and ignore the rest.

Does anyone have any idea how this will effect rankings? Although this site has recently been added to several directories and is being actively submitted, it's not yet ranked well. If it needs revised, now is the time to do it.

I should know better... (muttered repeatedly as I impatiently await replies)

Mixed bag Dave. It will work well on some engines, better on others, and worse on even others. Alta won't mind and will truncate the too long titles - hotbot will knock you just a bit for the ones that are too long. Google doesn't care except if it is over 127 chars. Fast seems to take anything up to 255 chars (no kidding). That is all the ones that come to mind.
